We Energies and Alliant Energy want to spend billions on new gas plants
We Energies and Alliant Energy want to build expensive new gas plants, locking Wisconsin into 30 more years of harmful fossil fuels. The window to make meaningful progress against climate change is closing.
We don’t have time to allow companies like We Energies and Alliant Energy to double-down on fossil fuels.
Why is this happening?
Building these expensive power plants is a windfall for power company shareholders, who can earn a 12% rate of return profit on plant construction costs. Large power plants and liquified gas pipelines are some of the most expensive projects power companies can build, especially compared to cheaper wind and solar. We Energies and Alliant Energy utilities are rushing to push expensive fossil fuel infrastructure through the Public Service Commission approval process before the tide turns toward clean energy sources.

Tell Microsoft to support clean energy in Wisconsin
Microsoft is building a massive AI data center in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, and We Energies plans to power this center with methane gas, locking Wisconsin into decades of dirty energy, harmful pollution, and missed climate goals. But we can change that. Sign the letter and tell Microsoft: Wisconsin deserves clean energy and a bright future!
Tell the PSC to protect customers and the climate!
If the Public Service Commission approves these projects, We Energies and Alliant Energy customers will be paying the price through higher bills, unhealthy air, and unreachable climate goals. Sign up for action alerts so you’ll be alerted when the PSC begins accepting public comments on these plants.
The Truth About Natural Gas
Natural gas is a huge contributor to climate change
Natural gas is mostly methane, which has more than 80 times the warming power of carbon dioxide over 20 years.
When you account for leaks of methane from the extraction, production and transportation of natural gas, its climate impact becomes comparable to coal.
Natural gas causes air pollution
Gas plants produce nitrous oxides which combine with other airborne pollutants to form particulate matter and ozone. Ozone pollution can reduce lung function, making it hard to breath, and aggravate diseases like asthma, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis. Fine particulate matter air pollution consists of tiny airborne particles that can penetrate deeply into the lungs, causing increased risk of asthma, heart attack, stroke and premature death.
Natural gas is expensive
Generating electricity by burning natural gas is far more expensive than wind or solar.
Natural gas is not always reliable
In the wake of catastrophic gas plant failures due to cold temperatures and short supplies, the Midwest grid operator’s new method to value resources will reduce the value of gas plants in the winter by more than 15%.
Fighting Superior Gas Plant
Clean Wisconsin has also been working to stop the Nemadji Trail Energy Center, a large gas plant planned for Superior, Wisconsin.
