MORE INFORMATION: Coal ash is a dangerous byproduct from coal-fired power plants that contains poisonous chemicals like arsenic, mercury and lead. There have already been documented cases of coal ash leaking into drinking water in Wisconsin.
The EPA is considering two different proposals for protecting the public from coal ash: federally enforced standards or suggested guidelines for states. Meanwhile, the coal industry is fighting tooth and nail to protect their profits and water down the standards.
Public hearings are being held in Chicago to gather comments and it is crucial that the public attend these to ensure that the EPA cracks down on coal ash.
Not able to take the trip to Chicago? Submitting online comments to the EPA is another great way to let them know we need enforceable standards instead of just suggested guidelines. Click here to submit comments online.
Sweet Water Watershed Action Team Meetings
Various Dates in 2010
Milwaukee, WI
Get involved in improving water quality in your area! Clean Wisconsin, along with a host of partners, is part of the collaborative watershed restoration effort known as Southeastern Wisconsin Watersheds Trust, Inc. (or Sweet Water, for short). Right now, Sweet Water is convening Watershed Action Teams for both the Menomonee and Kinnickinnic River watersheds. The Watershed Action Teams are made up of local residents, river users, and other stakeholders who want to help make the vision of fishable and swimmable waters in Milwaukee and the surrounding region a reality. If you would like to join in this effort, please see the meeting schedule below or sign up for the Sweet Water email list by contacting Becky Bains at bbains@cleanwisconsin.org.
